Super Hot Sauces Ranked

Flavor is often sacrificed when making a super hot sauce, but sometimes you just want a challenge. These heat level ratings are just based on my personal experience.

1. Nu-Killer - Rooster's
Heat level - 7
It's not the hottest sauce by any means, but since it's the hottest one they offer I would include it.  Out of all the "Super Hot" sauces places offer, this one can't be beat.

2. Afterburner - Wings Over Columbus
Heat level - 7

3. There Will be Tears - OH Pizza and Wings
Heat level - 8
I have to admit that I actually did shed a tear while eating these.

4. Gates of Hell - Barley's and Smokehouse Brewing Co.
Heat level - 7
Goes great with their grilled flavor.

5. Stupid Hot - JT's Pizza and Pub
Heat level - 8

6. Lava - Pastimes Pub
Heat level - 8
Ask to mix it with their BBQ, they call it Kickin BBQ.  It's not on the menu.

7. Volcano - Average Joe's
Heat level - 6
The only sauce I order at this place.  They claim it has won some awards.

8. ABG (Ass Burning Good) - Roadhouse Wings and Grill
Heat level - 6
Not that hot, but good flavor.  They also charge a little extra for it, so I stick with the X-hot here.

9. Blazin - BW3
Heat level - 9
The Blazin challenge is completed by eating 12 wings in 6 minutes without anything to drink or using napkins.  I've completed it 3 times, but they don't give you anything for doing it any more.

10. Fire in the Hole - Winking Lizard
Heat level - 12
These are definitely hot, but not a good flavor.  Stick with the 911's here, they have the right amount of flavor and heat.

11. Triple Atomic - Quaker Steak and Lube
Heat level - 13
These are without a doubt the hottest wings I've had in Columbus, but also the worst tasting.

My Favorites

Best Overall Wings in Columbus - Roadhouse Wings and Grill

These are the best cooked wings in Columbus.  James (the owner) has perfected the wing cooking process.  The right amount of crisp on the outside with steaming fresh meat on the inside.  Their boneless "wings" are also really good. They are lightly breaded and seasoned chunks of white meat cooked just right.

They also have a pretty good sauce selection where you get to choose your flavor the heat level.  The "heat" comes from the different leveled buffalo sauces mixed in with your choice of sauce.  For example, my favorite is X-hot Garlic, but this really translates into an extra spicy garlic buffalo sauce.

On top of these great qualities they have a wing special every day of the week except Friday!

Best Wing Place - Rooster's

Often voted best wings in Columbus for a reason.  It's hard to beat this combination great sauces, quality of wings, and atmosphere.  They include the tip on their flappers that many people are fond of.  I also like how you can mix up to 3 sauces.  I love the Nu-killer/Korean BBQ and the Donkey/Garlic/Carolina Gold combos.

Best Wing Special in Columbus - Barley's Brewing Company

Their wings are grilled and then finished off in the fryer.  The meat falls off the bone. Many consider them to be the best in Columbus and it would be hard to dispute that, but on Wednesday nights during their wing special they can't be beat.  They don't have a wide selection of sauces but they're all good. My favorite is the Gates of Hell. While you're there you might want to try their sauerkraut balls too.

Best Place to Watch Football and Eat Wings - Pastimes Pub

This is where you will find me every Sunday during football season. They don't have the best wings in town but for $.49/wing and $5 pitchers of beer (at the Worthington location only) I'm in. They have a friendly staff and a surprisingly good sauce selection. They also let you mix sauces. My favorite is the Kickin BBQ, which is a mix of Lava/BBQ but beware their Lava is actually hot. It's for the experienced wing eater only.

Best Place to Eat Wings on a Patio - Winking Lizard

When you combine a great patio, a good wing special, great sauce and beer selection, sports, and friendly service then that's where you will find me. My favorite is the Caribbean with a side of hot sauce to mix in. Their Fire in the Hole sauce is also one of the hottest sauces I've ever had, but not the best flavor. 911 is not as hot but more flavorful.

Best Smoked Wings in Columbus - Barley's Smokehouse

If you like smoked wings this is the place.  Unlike their counterpart downtown who grill the wings first, these guys smoke them first and then finish them off in the fryer.  I couldn't eat smoked wings everyday but I definitely like some variety in my life.
